The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee now offers a Master of Music degree with a
Concentration in String Pedagogy. The UWM Music Department provides an ideal
setting for a program in String Pedagogy. Degree candidates study with UWM
artist faculty combined with pedagogical training by faculty of the String
Academy of Wisconsin at UWM, an outreach program on the UWM campus which
provides a diverse cross-section of Milwaukee-area children with a comprehensive
musical education and professional instruction in violin, viola and cello, and
one of this country's model pre-college programs. In contrast to declining
performance opportunities for string players, studio teachers are in great
demand. The increased demand for studio string teachers is due in part to
decreased funding for public school programs combined with a resurgence of
interest in early musical training for children. A qualified graduate of the UWM
program will be able to establish a successful string program in virtually any
community.
The UWM string pedagogy degree program provides violinists, violists, and
cellists the specialized training needed to be effective and well-qualified
pre-college and college studio teachers. The degree also equips students with
the knowledge of how to set-up, manage and maintain string programs similar to
the String Academy of Wisconsin at UWM.
The degree requirements include thirty-four credits of coursework separated
into three
categories: major concentration, specific required courses, and
pedagogy. The faculty designed the coursework as such to encourage musical and
pedagogical proficiency in students. Additionally, students will study the
history of the most influential string pedagogues from 1700 to present day.
Pedagogy students will engage in public performances and have hands-on teaching
opportunities (besides observations of private and group string instruction) at
the String Academy, plus frequent opportunities to observe master classes taught
by visiting artists invited by the UWM Institute of Chamber Music and SAW.
Applicants must have completed the requirements for a Bachelors
Degree, have an interest in teaching, and be able to demonstrate a
high level of proficiency on either the violin, viola or cello.
Prior teaching experience is not required.
