Dubinsky Duo to Perform Benefit Concert

The Dubinsky Duo

The Dubinsky Duo

Rostislav Dubinsky, founder and former first violinist of the Borodin Quartet, and pianist Luba Edlina will perform a sonata recital at 3:00 PM on Sunday, November 7, 1993, at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Fine Arts Recital Hall. Tickets are $20 and $100 and may be purchased by calling 229-6121. A $100 ticket includes prime seating and dinner with the Dubinskys after the concert. All proceeds from this concert will benefit the String Academy.

Luba Edlina and Rostislav Dubinsky are well-known to American audiences as members of the renowned Borodin Trio. Their musical association began at the Moscow Conservatory where Ms. Edlina studied with Jacob Flier and Mr. Dubinsky with Abraham Yampolsky. They toured and performed as the Dubinsky Duo, and were also able to concertize together when Ms. Edlina joined the members of the highly-acclaimed Borodin Quartet (of which Mr. Dubinsky was a member for 30 years) for performances of the great piano quartet and piano quintet literature. As husband and wife, they were not permitted to travel outside the Soviet Union together. However, since their emigration to the west in 1976, they have toured extensively both as a duo, and with former cellist Yuli Turovsky and current cellist Laslo Varga as the Borodin Trio. Following the New York debut of the Dubinsky Duo, the New York Times wrote: “These are major artists, no doubt it … all in all, a most impressive ‘debut,’ and a duo worth hearing again, soon.”

In their November 7 recital, Mr. Dubinsky and Ms. Edlina will perform sonatas by Dmitri Shostakovich, Alfred Schnittke and Johannes Brahms. This concert will be part of the city-wide Sesquicentennial Celebration of the Jewish Community in Milwaukee, and will include Dubinsky’s reminiscences about life as a Jewish musician in Russia. Mr. Dubinsky is the author of a book on this subject, Stormy Applause, copies of which will be available at the concert. Mr. Dubinsky and Ms. Edlina are on the faculty of the Indiana University School of Music in Bloomington.

All proceeds from this concert will benefit the String Academy of Wisconsin at UWM.
